Why We Love It
First launched in 2011, this Planet Ocean Chronograph, the ref. 232.32.46.51.01.002, came as part of the second generation update to the series. Positioned as the highest-grade professional option for diving in the brand’s catalog, the watch continued on the tradition of the series which preceded it in the last decade, catching fire among enthusiasts for its ability to touch the bottom of the ocean and return unscathed, all while keeping a useful chronograph on hand to help get the job done.
Featuring a hard-wearing 45.5mm by 19.5mm steel case, the watch has plenty of Planet Ocean signatures, including easily adjustable screw-down crown, helium escape, and deeply toothed unidirectional rotating bezel, here with a bright orange insert. A pair of screw-down chronograph pushers add to its utility, with a pair of corresponding registers on the dial adding to its ease of use via their Plongeur-style indicators. It’s a watch that from its case alone oozes confidence in and out of the water, and one that’s more than prepared for a few bumps along the way.
On the black dial, just like the case, the focus of the Planet Ocean is on functionality, the configuration as a whole maintaining superior legibility with its bolder markers and hands contrasting against a dark background, with cheeky touches of orange scattered around. A small date window blends into the style at the six o’clock position, providing the watch some more everyday usefulness, but without distracting from the clear diver-focus of the even more professional-grade Seamaster.
